Harry Redknapp criticises Edinson Cavani to United transfer

Harry Redknapp has described the signing of Edinson Cavani as ‘desperate’.

You would be forgiven for thinking Manchester United fans’ frustration throughout the transfer market was shared by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before the club acted and signed four players on deadline-day.

Youngsters Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo arrived along with Alex Telles and Paris Saint-Germain all-time top goalscorer Cavani on a Bosman.

Redknapp criticised the deal.

“Signing Cavani, 33, on over £200,000 a week on the final day of the transfer window did smack of desperation to me,” the former Tottenham Hotspur manager told The Sun.

“I had people telling me eight weeks ago he was keen to come to England. When I heard the wages I just wished them good luck.

“If he was someone United were that keen to signing, why did they leave it so late?

“Cavani has been a great player over the years and if he’s still got that hunger and the talent, then he’ll do a good job for them.

“I hope for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sake he is because they certainly cannot afford any more displays like that one against Spurs.

“The worrying thing was a few of them seemed to throw in the towel.”

A hard-hitting assessment from Redknapp, but one that is difficult to agree with. United spent the summer dreaming about Jadon Sancho despite not making one formal offer for the winger, who was Solskjaer’s main target from the beginning of the transfer market.

I think Cavani will fit in well at United and his experience should carry us through games that we drew or lost last season.

The squad is slightly better than it was but a lot of the same holes remain.

Unfortunately we have not made the signings needed to see an significant improvement this term.
