Dimitar Berbatov slams Boro goal that cost Manchester United a place in FA Cup fifth round

We should all be able to agree that Middlesbrough’s goal in the FA Cup against Manchester United wasn’t worthy of being allowed, but it stood despite VAR intervention and a bizarre change of ruling.

Isaiah Jones’ cross-field pass found Duncan Watmore inside the box, only for him to control the ball off his right foot and onto his left hand, before assisting Matt Crooks’ controversial equaliser shortly after the hour mark.

Former United striker Dimitar Berbatov believes it was “unfair”, insisting United ought to still be in the FA Cup, and urged Betfair to refund people who had put money on United to win the competition this season.

“Manchester United are out of the FA Cup, I saw the game and I couldn’t believe they lost on penalties to Middlesbrough,” Berbatov told the betting firm, as cited by the Manchester Evening News. “I was not happy.

“United had a lot of chances, Ronaldo missed a penalty, Bruno Fernandes hit the post and it should have been a different score.

“I have to say, Middlesbrough’s goal was handball, I didn’t think it should have stood, not because I used to play for United but because the ball would have clearly gone in a different direction and the handball prevented that.

“I find that unfair, but I have had a word with Betfair, and they are refunding people who bet on United to win the FA Cup.”

United missed enough chances to win three or four football matches as the game went to extra-time and then penalties. Our record from spot-kicks in recent years has been atrocious and we might need to start working on them more ahead of the Champions League round-of-16 clash against Atletico Madrid.

  1. Rules are rules, if the boot was on the other foot this conversation would have gone away very quickly. Manchester United have had loafds of very dubious decisions go their way over many years.
Stop whinging and get over it.
