Middlesbrough interested in Michael Carrick over vacant managerial role

Michael Carrick is not currently in a job after resigning from his position at Manchester United following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021.

The former United midfielder assumed responsibility on an interim basis when the Norwegian was let go last year, managing the side for three games.

Carrick’s record was impressive, with United sandwiching a draw at Stamford Bridge with wins over Villarreal and Arsenal. The expectation was that Carrick would remain in the dugout alongside Ralf Rangnick but the former England star decided to take a break instead.

It’s unclear whether he has been approached over roles since he left United but now, there are reports that Middlesbrough are ready to enter him a route back into management.

That’s according to the BBC, who say that the struggling Championship club are seeking talks with Carrick over their vacant managerial role following the sacking of Chris Wilder.

Middlesbrough are currently 18th in the Championship table after clawing themselves out of the relegation places with a win over Birmingham earlier this week.

As per the report, owner Steve Gibson is keen to explore the possibility of Carrick taking the job on a permanent basis after deciding that Leo Percovich would assume responsibility temporarily.

SN’s verdict…
Carrick’s brief tenure in charge of United showed that he has the tactical nouse to succeed as a manager but obviously, there are other criteria that need to be met.

Championship clubs are usually more inclined to appoint aspiring managers with little experience but if you enter a toxic environment, it can be damaging. Wayne Rooney did well at Derby County under very difficult circumstances.

The opportunity to manage in the Championship is a good opportunity for Carrick but it remains to be seen whether he’s keen on returning to football less than 12 months after deciding to take a break.
