Manchester United book place in Carabao Cup final against Newcastle

Manchester United have reached the Carabao Cup final.

Erik ten Hag is positioning himself nicely to win a trophy in his first season as Manchester United. The Red Devils are still fighting on all fronts but a vastly improved Newcastle side await them in the Carabao Cup final.

Newcastle knocked out Southampton in the semi-finals and made hard work of a tie against below average opposition. United got the job done against Nottingham Forest by winning 3-0 in the first leg before going on to beat them again (2-0) at Old Trafford.

The Reds didn’t perform exceptionally well, but Ten Hag will be happy for a number of reasons. United scored five goals and conceded none over the two legs, Jadon Sancho returned and Anthony Martial is back on the scoresheet.

Martial opened the scoring after coming off the bench and United’s lead was doubled by another substitute in the name of Fred.

Manchester United’s confidence is now so high that they will be relaxed about the final against Newcastle at Wembley on 26 February – and this is while pushing for a place in the Premier League top four and next season’s Champions League.

Manchester United 2-0 Nottingham Forest (5-0 on aggregate) – Wednesday 1 February
