(Video) Referee makes laughable decision as Pellistri is carded for Real Betis foul

Manchester United are taking on Real Betis in the second leg of their round-of-16 Europa League tie, with Erik ten Hag’s men maintaining their 4-1 aggregate lead at half-time.

Ten Hag named a strong side for the game in Andalusia, with the Dutchman showing very little fear of having players suspended for the next round of fixtures.

Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes are both one yellow card away from a one-match suspension but the pair both started the game and interestingly, Facundo Pellistri was handed his first senior start for the club.

Pellistri has impressed in his brief cameos lately and the Uruguay international was lively again against Betis but one moment has stood out.

The 21-year-old initiated an attack on the right-hand side and masterfully kept the ball in United’s possession before being lunged at by a Real Betis defender, as seen below.

Quite incredibly, the referee’s decision was to award a free-kick to the home side and give Pellistri a yellow card, completely disregarding the reckless tackle from the defender.

The decision follows a series of questionable performances from referees against United, with last weekend’s game against Southampton understandably sparking an inquest into Anthony Taylor’s performance.
