Frenkie de Jong has no problem repeating himself for the headline hungry reporters. The Netherlands international has reiterated his desire to stay at Barcelona admits Manchester United interest.
Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong continues to stress that he wants to stay at Barcelona.
The Reds chased the Netherlands international for over 100 days last summer, but came up short despite reaching an agreement with Barcelona.
To De Jong’s credit, albeit it’s annoying that he wouldn’t sign for United, he has stuck to his guns whenever asked about leaving the club of his dreams. I admire players who don’t fall for the transfer circus because that only leads to more speculation.
It would be worse if De Jong gave the impression he wanted to move only to snub the opportunity at a later date.
That didn’t stop reports hinting that Erik ten Hag could launch another pursuit for the midfielder this summer.
However, speaking to TV3 (H/t Manchester Evening News), De Jong hopes go remain at Camp Nou for years to come.
“Hopefully I can play in the new Camp Nou,” De Jong said. “Barcelona has always been the club of my dreams and I want to stay here for many years.”
With Barcelona set to renovate Camp Nou, the La Liga giants won’t be able to play in the stadium for the 2023/24 campaign, which means the 25-year-old is planning to stay where he is for the foreseeable future at least.
De Jong does not sound like someone planning to move to Manchester anytime soon. For that reason alone, United should move on with alternative targets in the summer.
One alternative option the club should be looking at is Enzo Le Fee at Ligue 1 side Lorient.
This begs the question: how many times with De Jong get asked about his future between now and the end of the season?
