Wout Weghorst revisits impressive World Cup goal

Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst has confirmed the Netherlands’ free-kick routine that resulted in a goal against Argentina was his idea.

During a match against the eventual World Cup-winners in Qatar, Weghorst hit the back of the net to make the game 2-1, before grabbing an equaliser to equal the scoring in injury time.

The second goal came from a well-worked free-kick routine. As some would say, it came straight from the training ground.

Speaking about the free-kick, Weghorst told MOTDx.

“It actually all started [practising the free-kick routine] when we came together for the World Cup,” Weghorst told MOTDx. “It was my idea because we had done it with Wolfsburg, during my time in Germany, so that’s why we did it the first time.

“It was quite successful. One minute before we had another free-kick, which made it possible, but we didn’t do the routine and a minute later, I was fouled also and I said ‘ok, it’s time to do it’.

“I told the guys, showed them, we made the positions how we wanted it, with two inside.”
