Overall I think Wout Weghorst has had a positive impact at Manchester United, but I can totally understand why people don’t think he cuts the mustard in a Red shirt.
The Netherlands international has scored two goals and registered two assists in 18 matches since joining Manchester United on loan from Burnley. However, Weghorst has yet to score a goal in the Premier League under Erik ten Hag.
Weghorst’s work-rate and link-up play is second to none, and it’s easy to see why the forward is popular among his team-mates, but in front of goal he is nowhere near prolific enough.
That is the reason why Ten Hag will be prioritising an elite-level goalscorer in the summer.
Newly appointed Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman included the United forward in the national squad for this month’s international break. Weghorst played 90 minutes against Gibraltar last night but failed to hit the back of the net.
Furthermore, Weghorst’s performances didn’t impress Ruud Gullet, who was critical of his compatriot last night.
“I always look at him in a weird way. I have a lot of admiration for him, but at the same time I think: he is not good enough for Manchester United and the Orange. Every now and then you see defects,” Gillet told Ziggo Sport, as relayed by Soccernews.
Although it is clear we need a better goalscorer next season, I wouldn’t be against the idea of keeping Weghorst as an option in the squad.
There is no denying he has been a bonus for Ten Hag since arriving, especially with Anthony Martial always ruled out of action.

I would keep Weghorst and have him up front with another striker. His pressing of the keeper and defenders is excellent and we have created goals because he has played high up the field and constantly harassed the other team into mistakes. For me that is an assist in itself.
