Why Manchester United are desperate to get Mason Mount deal across the line – opinion

Manchester United have jumped quickly to lead the race to sign Mason Mount.

There has been some positive news on Mason Mount’s future this week as the midfielder has agreed personal terms with Manchester United.

Obviously it’s important to state that there is still some way to go in negotiations before a deal between Manchester United and Chelsea can be completed, and talks are ongoing as of now.

Chelsea have been anticipating approaches from Arsenal and Liverpool for Mount, but it doesn’t sound like there will be a bidding war this summer as the player appears set on moving to Old Trafford.

The England international has been heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge in the coming months, following the club’s influx of central midfielders and the player’s reluctant to sign an extension.

The Telegraph broke the news on Wednesday night that Mount and United had agreed personal terms.

This looks like a sign that the two clubs are trying to do business swiftly.

It also means progress has been made and United are getting the ball moving to sign their first player of the summer transfer window, hence why I think we’re appearing desperate to get complete the deal. Ten Hag, who has been watching Mount for six years, will want to know what he has to work with before the squad jets off to the United States on pre-season tour.

Both United and Chelsea will be paying close attention to the Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations and making sure they are financially disciplined and complaint throughout the summer window. After spending over £213 million this year with little to no money recouped from player sales, the Reds need to shift some players on before more signings can be made. That is why you are reading lists of players that should be moved on this summer.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are facing a major summer clear out under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, in a bid to comply with the FFP regulations following recorded losses of £121 million for last season. The Times claim that after splashing out nearly £600m on players over the past two transfer windows, Chelsea must find a way to balance the books — especially after missing out on Champions League football.

With all of that in mind, I can’t imagine why either club would want this Mount story becoming a transfer saga, especially when his mind has already been made up over which club he wants to join next.

United and Chelsea should be able to come to a compromise over the transfer fee. They’re both trying to sell players this summer and the aim for every club and manager should be to get their business done early in the transfer window. There is no reason for Mount speculation to drag on for anymore than a few weeks.

For me, Mount is a fantastic player and it is no wonder that we have been reading comments from unhappy Chelsea fans reacting to the likelihood of him signing for us.

The Chelsea academy graduate would arrive as not only an additional option in midfield, but a big improvement on players such as Fred and Scott McTominay. Mount can play as a No.6, No.8 or even as a No. 10 if called upon, allowing his to essentially provide cover for each of United’s three midfield spots.

To conclude, not only would Mount offer an immediate helping hand to United’s relatively bare midfield, but he would also provide some much-needed firepower in the form of goalscoring contributions (goals/assists).
