Sammy McIlroy believes Manchester United can ruin Man City’s treble bid

Sammy McIlroy was the last player signed for Manchester United by Sir Matt Busby and he made more than 400 appearances for the club.

McIlroy previews the FA Cup final between Manchester United and Man City, two clubs he represented as a player during his career.

That means the former Northern Ireland international and manager speaks as someone with a foot in both halves of Manchester, but he’s backing the Reds to win at Wembley.

McIlroy believes United have the firepower and hunger to crush Man City’s treble bid.

City have already won the Premier League and face Inter Milan in the Champions League final on June 10. Pep Guardiola knows a win is needed to keep their Treble hopes alive.

In turn, they would become the second English side to complete the treble — after United’s treble success under Sir Alex Ferguson in 1999.

McIlroy recalls destroying Liverpool’s treble hopes in 1977.

“We stopped Liverpool in 77, they were red hot favourites and had already won the league just as City have,” McIlroy told the Belfast Telegraph.

“If you let City play they can destroy you but we have already beaten City this season and (Erik) ten Hag will have a gameplan, with the players going into the game with confidence.”
