Manchester United target wins Anderlecht player of the year award

Bart Verbruggen is one of the many goalkeepers linked with a move to Manchester United this summer.

While we still expect David de Gea to sign a new contract, Erik ten Hag has been clear about not being able to give the Spaniard assurances over his No. 1 role in the future.

It is possible that the Dutchman will look to sign a new goalkeeper to replace De Gea or challenge him for the first choice role at United.

Media outlets initially reported United’s interest in Bart Verbruggen last month, with the Anderlecht goalkeeper valued at approximately £15 million.

The shot-stoppers performances have been recognised by his club’s supporters, who will hope Anderlecht can keep their star between the posts for another season.

Verbruggen collected 36% of the fan vote for Anderlecht’s player of the season award. In second place came former Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen.

A statement from Anderlecht reads: “In barely 17 Jupiler Pro League games, he managed to convince you of his class. His saves at crucial moments were clearly appreciated.”

Aged 20, this could be a smart investment as an alternative to De Gea next season, especially with Dean Henderson closing in on a permanent move to Nottingham Forest.

Ten Hag needs a keeper who is renowned for playing out from the back, along with willingness to come off his line and play the sweeper role. Now would be a good time to act if he thinks Verbruggen can help improve the team.
