Alex Telles rules out summer move to Portuguese rivals

Manchester United left-back Alex Telles has ruled out a transfer to Portuguese giants Benfica.

The Brazil international is one of the players who could leave Manchester United this summer after falling down the pecking order at left-back.

Erik ten Hag decided to send the 31-year-old on loan to Sevilla last season, and it was already clear from this decision that the Brazilian full-back was surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

Tyrell Malacia came in as back-up to Luke Shaw at left-back and it’s not a position fans worry about anymore.

Nothing is expected to change in that regard. Telles is one of the squad members that Ten Hag would like to sell, but United must wait for the right offer. United are well-stocked at left-back and Telles knows he won’t get sufficient game time he stays next season. Fellow defender Eric Bailly finds himself in the same boat.

As a result, Telles has been linked with a number of European clubs, including Benfica. After playing for FC Porto, however, he doesn’t want to join a rival club in the same league.

Speaking to the Denilson Show (via Manchester Evening News), Telles said: “I have an opinion about this. Going back to that subject I told you about leaving a legacy at the club.

“When you play for a club and leave a legacy, leave a good image, fought so hard to play and leave a good image… I, Alex, would not play for the rival, for example. Because, for example, I made history at Porto, everyone likes me there.

“There’s no way to play for Benfica, you know?”

Telles joined United from Porto in October 2020 and a return to Portugal – for Benfica – looks unlikely.
