The new Premier League season is just two weeks away with Manchester United kicking it all off against Wolves at Old Trafford. That means it’s time for predictions and Sky Sports duo Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher are confident Man City will not be caught.
Pep Guardiola’s side won The Treble in 2023/24 and they are well within their right to argue that they’ve got the strongest team in world football at present. That may take a hit this season, depending on how they react to losing players like Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez, whom have been key behind their success in recent years.
Meanwhile, City have made just one signing this summer – Matteo Kovacic from Chelsea.
When asked by FourFourTwo magazine if anyone will stop City in the Premier League, Neville replied: “Sitting here today, it’s difficult to say yes.” Carragher agreed: “No, I don’t think so.”
City will launch their title defence against their Vincent Kompany’s Burnley at Turf Moor on Friday, August 11.
When it comes to United, Neville believes there is one issue holding us back from mounting a title challenge. He said: “It’s all dependent on the budget. Under the owners the club has had, I think they’ll probably still finish in the top four, but I don’t think they’ll improve on it. If they got new owners and had £250m or £300m to spend, they’ve got a chance of going up to second.
“I do think they’ve got a chance of taking that spot off Arsenal – that’s up for grabs – but they’d have to spend well.”
Roll on the new season and everything that comes with it!
