Player ratings as Manchester United lose 3-2 to Borussia Dortmund

Manchester United suffered three losses on the bounce after losing 3-2 to Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas for their fifth match of the summer tour. Bruno Fernandes started on the bench, but Erik ten Hag opted to hand the captaincy to Scott McTominay, despite former captain Harry Maguire also starting. 

United saw the majority of possession in the first half and looked dangerous, despite a weaker starting eleven. The Reds’ high press caused problems for Dortmund in dangerous areas. Trying to play out from the back with the same incapable defenders, though, saw United cause problems for themselves in the dying moments of the first half, which allowed Dortmund to score two goals in the space of a minute. 

United’s second half subs weren’t as lively as their first half counterparts and ultimately gifted Dortmund the winning goal after yet another sloppy mistake. There’s loads of work to be done yet, but that’s what preseason is all about, right? It’s back home at Old Trafford in a week, where the Red Devils host Ligue 1 side, RC Lens. 

Manchester United Player Ratings 

Tom Heaton – 6

Not much to do for the veteran, but he was vocal and organized his defenders. Saw more action late in the first half, but handled it well. Nothing he could do about Dortmund’s goals, which came from mistakes by his defenders. 

Brandon Williams – 7

He’s a fighter, for sure. Determined in both defense and attack tonight. Unlucky to have slipped at the wrong time to allow Adeyemi’s run that ultimately led to Dortmund’s equalizer. Capable option if Tyrell Malacia’s injury is severe. 

Victor Lindelof – 4

After a mostly quiet first half, gave away a sloppy pass straight to Donyell Malen for Dortmund’s second goal. 

Harry Maguire – 4

No armband despite Bruno not starting. Booed by the fans whenever he touched the ball. Kept things simple and sniffed out the danger on a few occasions to win back possession. Caught out of position after Lindelof’s mistake, leaving Malen with acres of space.

Diogo Dalot – 6

Final ball still needs work, but showed energy to get into advanced areas. Took his goal well just outside the area, wrapping his foot around the ball to put it past Kobel. Top bins. 

Scott McTominay (c) – 5

Wasn’t very involved in the first 15 minutes, but slowly played himself into the match. Looks better the higher up the pitch he plays. Needs to stop hiding from the ball when United have possession, though.

Christian Eriksen – 4

Played in the double pivot, but was largely anonymous off the ball. Looked a step behind his teammates, but played a few superb long balls. Superb free kick effort on goal to force a superb save from Kobel. 

Donny van de Beek – 7

Committed to the high press at the number ten and caused problems for Dortmund’s defenders. Showed for the ball often and linked up well with Sancho in the final third. Did well to hold off his defender and provide the cushioned ball to assist Dalot’s goal. 

Facundo Pellistri – 7

Often found space to receive the ball, but decision-making in the final third needs work. Caused problems for Dortmund in wide areas and stretched their defense. 

Jadon Sancho – 7

Played as a striker and pressed Kobel whenever the keeper received a pass. Excellent under pressure in tight spaces. Did well to track back and win the ball in his own half to launch a counter. Became more of a playmaker as the first half progressed.

Omari Forson – 4

Should have done better with his chance on goal. Missed a few opportunities to link up with Dalot’s overlapping runs. Frustrated to be subbed off in the first half, but after picking up a rash booking for his tussle with Karim Adeyemi, the youngster was a sending off waiting to happen. 

Substitutes

Andre Onana – 6

Halftime sub. Brilliant save to deny Haller’s one-on-one chance. Calm on the ball under pressure and vocal with his backline. 

Jonny Evans – 4

Completely lost sight of Marco Reus to allow the German to square the ball for Youssoufa Moukoko’s goal. 

Lisandro Martinez – 5

Not quite his fiery self, but did the simple things well and sniffed out the danger when called upon. Played a perfect long ball to find Bruno in the box, who couldn’t keep it. 

Luke Shaw – 4

Not his best 45 minutes this summer. Guilty of giving away a few needless fouls. Not as daring in the final third as he could have been, opting for the safe pass back instead of putting a ball into the box. 

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 4

His wayward shot is still soaring over the Las Vegas strip. Sloppy giveaway in a dangerous area that led to Dortmund’s third goal. 

Bruno Fernandes – 6

Played a few brilliant balls into the box and to feet, which deserved better finishes from his teammates (story of last season). 

Casemiro – 5

Unlucky to have not gotten more on his headed attempt. What a perfectly cushioned through ball to find Rashford, though, who forced a save from Alex Meyer. 

Hannibal Mejbri – n/a

Mason Mount – 5

Relatively quiet, aside from a few late runs in the final third and some one-touch link-up play. Unlucky not to get to Rashford’s squared pass in the box, though. Effective at both ends of the pitch.

Antony – 6

Subbed on for Forson in the first half. Did well to pounce on a loose ball at the edge of the box to curl it into the back of the net. 

Joe Hugill – 5

Made a great run to get on the end of Bruno’s inch-perfect pass. Should have done better with his chance, but one touch too many let him down. 

Marcus Rashford – 6

Showed respect and sportsmanship to stop his attack when Thomas Meunier pulled up with an injury. Looked dangerous on the ball in the final third, especially since he opted to stay wide and create chances.
