Journalist makes bold Manchester derby prediction with midfielder leading United’s line at the Etihad

Manchester United make the short trip over to the Etihad tomorrow for a 3.30pm derby kick-off in the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag is navigating numerous debilitating injury woes to his squad, with the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund all sidelined. The latter’s absence has left a gaping hole at the heart of United’s attack as his and Anthony Martial’s setbacks mean there are no recognised centre-forwards available.

Prior to sustaining his muscle complaint, Hojlund was on a run of seven goals in six straight league matches, becoming the youngest-ever player to achieve the feat when he struck home the opener against Luton Town a fortnight ago.

Since he was ruled out of action, United have scored just two goals – neither of which has been from a forward player. Harry Maguire equalised last week against Fulham before the Reds went on to lose in injury time, while Casemiro’s 89th-minute midweek header was enough to book a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Lacking firepower in the frontline is quite literally the last thing any side needs when taking on City, who are just finding their form at the right time with the returns of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland.

McTominay at No.9? Surely not…

However, The Athletic’s Mark Critchley has thrown a bold suggestion into the mix when he shared his predicted line-up; he’s deployed Scott McTominay in the No.9 role with Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho on either side of him.

Fans will be well aware of the stories detailing how the Scotsman used to play as a striker during his academy days before his size and stature led to him making the switch to midfield.

His numbers this term have been nothing short of prolific though – seven goals and one assist in the league ranks him higher than the likes of Rashford, Garnacho and Antony, as well as joint-first with Hojlund as United’s top ‘scorer in the division.

Would Ten Hag take such a risk during a high-stakes clash like the derby?

  1. Why NOT! Marcus seems “a little lost” in a striker role. Scott will have the “desire” to get into the box and “fight” for space which I think Marcus is not suited for. People say we should be worried about City’s personnel, righty so, but if we play withe “heart and desire” any MU player should, City and further opponents have to “fear us !”
If we take our chances, I predict a DRAW. Go REDS !
