Manchester United could be signing a new first-choice goalkeeper for the first time in a decade this summer, with David de Gea’s contract expiring at the end of this season.
De Gea has been a mainstay in the side since joining from Atletico Madrid 12 years ago but with just four months remaining on his deal, there are no signs of an imminent extension.
Erik ten Hag put his faith in De Gea last summer but earlier on Friday, it was reported that although United are said to be in talks with the Spaniard over a new deal on reduced wages, Brentford star David Raya and FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa are being actively scouted.
Speaking ahead of this weekend’s Premier League action, Brentford manager was quizzed on Raya’s future at the London club following links to Old Trafford.
“I think we need to get into the Champions League and then he will reconsider (re-signing),” Frank is quoted as saying by West London Sport.
“I love David as a keeper I think he is fantastic. But of course I am biased as I work with him every single day. I really believe he is one of the best in the Premier League. Right now he is a Brentford player and been a big part of our success, so let’s see what happens in the summer.
“If someone wants to come in and buy him then he will be very expensive. For me, it would have to be £40m-plus.”
Raya has just one year remaining on his contract at Brentford and as Frank points out, it’s looking unlikely that he will be committing his long-term future to the Bees.

De Gea is one of the modern-day heroes at United but there is a feeling that his time may be up, with his kicking and distribution frustrating Ten Hag in particular.
No one quite knows what’s going to happen but the feeling is that this could go either way. If De Gea does end up staying on reduced terms, what will the length of that contract be and will he be given guarantees over playing time?
That’s something Ten Hag will consider before sanctioning anything and perhaps he prioritises a different profile over keeping De Gea. Only time will tell.
