Former Manchester United player admits Luton’s defeat vs Reds was ‘a sickener’

Teden Mengi was disgruntled to have not claimed any points from Sunday’s meeting with his former club Manchester United.

The Red Devils took an early two-goal lead courtesy of Rasmus Hojlund’s double, the first of which etched his name into the Premier League history books as he became the youngest-ever player to score in six consecutive matches (21 years and 14 days old).

It was then that the tide turned though and in United’s case, not for the better. Luton Town grew into the gritty clash and eventually halved the deficit through Carlton Morris, who was also captaining the side in Tom Lockyer’s absence.

His contribution came in the 14th minute and led to an end-to-end, tense 70+ minutes of action, with Erik ten Hag’s men again demonstrating their inability to kill the game off as they saw numerous chances squandered in the second half.

Ross Barkley then had United with their hearts in their mouths after he hit the woodwork in injury time, and you could almost see the away side – and Erik ten Hag – breathe a collective sigh of relief upon David Coote’s blow of the whistle.

No love lost for Mengi upon second United reunion

Having spent 14 years working his way through the youth ranks before making two senior appearances, Mengi would’ve entered the fixture with perhaps a lot more to prove than his Hatters counterparts.

The Carrington graduate’s post-match reaction detailed just how dissatisfied he was with the game’s conclusion. He told club media (as cited by Luton Today): “It’s a tough one to take, it’s a sickener as I feel like we dominated both halves.

“We were brave on the ball, obviously an early mistake within a minute, we concede a goal, and then not long after we concede another. A lucky deflection, but I feel like without the mistakes and the lucky deflection, we go on and win that game.

“They can have their arguments, they created a lot of chances as well, but so did we. If we had a little bit more quality and detail in the final third, we can put away our chances as we did create a hell of a lot of chances, but it’s a sickener.”
